repurpose..recycle...upcycle

It's happening under a wide range of names - recycling, upcycling, repurposing, reusing and others. But what is it and why such roaring popularity? Upcycling craft queen Pouch in Bristol has a little delve into it all to tell us more...

"The popularity of eco-crafts has increased dramatically over the past few years. Consumers are choosing to throw less away and reuse what they have. In less than two hours the UK produces enough waste to fill the Albert Hall, each UK household produces more than 1 tonne of rubbish annually and over 900,000 million items of clothing are thrown away each year in this country alone.

In times of dwindling resources and worries about climate change, crafts which include a recycled element are on the rise. Many crafters enjoy finding new and innovative ways to re-use items and materials that would once have been discarded. When you consider the facts about waste in the UK, crafts that try to reduce their impact on the planet will become more and more essential."

More on this at the UK DIY exhibition, Turnpike Gallery from Feb 14th - Apr 25th; at the Flickr group dedicated to all things remade; and Eco Emporium where you can buy planet-happy handmade goods from repurposed materials.
